I tried the traditional route. I sold my first book to a traditional publisher, and I signed on with a traditional literary agency - in both cases, very well known entities. Not long ago, this was the way you did it. It was that road, or no road. But things have changed, and continue to change, in the publishing business. They are trying hard to adapt. The jury is out, but it’s not looking good for the old guard, in my opinion.
That leaves the third variable in the equation - the authors. They’re having to adapt too. Fortunately, I’m me. It’s a lot easier for little old me to change, to adapt to a new reality. So that’s exactly what I’ve done.
I have a new agent. He is anything but a traditional agent. He doesn’t work for an agency. Never has. He does not have a list of incredible best selling authors to his credit, and yet, he is exactly what I’ve been looking for. He is everything I’ve wanted to to represent me: a passion for my work, a person who is always there for me, who has an unparalleled drive, and the kind of energy and determination needed to do whatever it takes to surmount seemingly impossible odds. I need someone who is irrepressible, who never quits, who has experienced - but always learned from - failure. I need a person who knows first hand what it takes to develop a global brand from the ground up.
And finally, I want someone I greatly admire - someone I look up to. That person is Alex Flynn.
I try to live my life in the least traditional, least conforming way possible. I’m proud of that, just as I am proud of my choice of representation. With Alex, I have no doubt that I will reach my goals. And what’s really cool about this partnership is that I get to reciprocate by helping Alex achieve his own goals. Five percent (5%) of everything my future projects bring in will go to his 10MillionMetres fund (https://www.facebook.com/10MillionMetres) , directly benefitting charities seeking a cure for Parkinson’s.
The future looks good. As Alex would say, "Keep moving".
