Boys versus Girls

Boys read less than girls. There, I said it. Especially when it comes to fiction.

This male female reading gap gets wider with age. Overall, women and girls make up 70-80% of the sales of fiction.

Fewer than 30% of boys 8-18 read in their spare time, and this is my target audience. After all, I write action adventure books geared towards middle grade and YA readers, especially boys.

So that’s how I’m going to kick off my new blog. I’m hoping for some interaction with other writers and readers and parents of kids who read (and of kids who are reluctant to read). Let’s talk about it. Let’s figure out how to reverse this faltering segment of readers.

Leigh Lyons

Born in California, G. Leigh Lyons spent the first decade of his formative years growing up in Venezuela, Ecuador and Iran. He spent the next thirty years as a geologist and business executive, becoming an alumnus of Harvard Business School in the meantime. Leigh’s career took him and his family to live in many foreign countries, including Bolivia, Argentina and Mexico. He drew from these experiences and adventures for his Avery McShane stories, among others.
